Atopic Dermatitis Q & A
What is atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes red, itchy skin.
When you have healthy skin, it retains moisture that protects it from irritants, bacteria, and allergens. Flexural eczema occurs when your skin loses this protection and gets easily irritated.
Neurodermatitis can affect anyone, but most people develop this chronic condition before age 5. You’re more likely to have Flexural eczema if someone in your family had or has the condition.
What are the symptoms of infantile eczema?
Atopic dermatitis symptoms can vary from person to person but often include:
- Dry, itchy skin
- Patches of discolored skin
- Raised bumps that can leak or crust over
- Scaly, cracked, or thickened skin
When you have Prurigo Besnier, your itching is often worse at night. In some cases, you can develop swollen, raw, and sensitive skin due to continual scratching.
What triggers atopic dermatitis?
Certain environmental factors that trigger Prurigo Besnier symptoms include:
- Irritants like soaps and detergents
- Allergens like pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust mites
- Extreme temperatures
- Certain foods like dairy, wheat, and nuts
- Changes in hormone levels
While stress doesn’t cause neurodermatitis, it can worsen your symptoms.
How is allergic eczema diagnosed and treated?
Your allergist at Allergy Testiong Center can often diagnose atopic dermatitis through a skin examination and by reviewing your medical history. They may suggest additional testing to eliminate other skin diseases or find other conditions that may be present.
01Your allergist will recommend lifestyle changes to manage your condition. These may include using mild soaps and detergents, taking warm baths, applying moisturizers, and using medicated skin creams or ointments. Wearing soft clothes with smooth textures and practicing stress management techniques can also reduce Prurigo Besnier flare-ups. For severe cases of Neurodermatitis that don’t respond to conventional therapy, a new biologic injectable is very effective.
